Excellent Seafood Cuisine
Local Restaurants feature amazingly fresh seafood prepared in a variety of ways. The food was a fantastic surprise as we learned the island and has continued to get better and better with each visit. New restaurants are opening (and closing!) all the time. Two of the best and most consistent on the island are Viva Zapata and Café Colibri. (Breakfast at the corner restaurant on the square at Colibri is amazing. The fresh squeezed smoothie is a must. Dinner is served next door on the second story of a new Palapa with beautiful music mixing with the wind in the palm trees) New chefs from all over are discovering the fresh ingredients and are developing an amazingly good and healthy cuisine. At one restaurant, try the Langosta (Lobster) pizza. Just an amazing treat. On one recent visit we enjoyed Permit caught just that afternoon in a wonderful local sauce. Many of the local hotels also have wonderful restaurants including Casa Sandra, Los Mapaches and Las Palmas.

In addition ceviche on this island is simply incomparable. Order it in one of the many restaurants (including Las Palmas right on the beach) along with a margarita and you will have one of the best lunches around.
Other food issues – we have never had a problem with the food bought in the local markets or from street vendors but we do only drink bottled water. Our homes caretaker can get you 5 gallon water jugs. There is a dispenser in the home. She can also get you beer, ice etc. We have walked the streets of Holbox buying the tortillas just as they come off the machine, buying Pollo Asada (BBQ Chicken) off the streets, buying tomatoes, chilies and hot sauce and making amazing tacos at home. Use common sense, however, just as you would in any international location.
Edelyn Pizza
One of the oldest but best on the island, Edelyn has amazing food including ceviche, garlic bread, amazing pizza and much local fare. Sit inside, on the upper deck or on the square and watch the world go by. A perfect place for young and old alike to share the culinary splendor of Isla Holbox.
Pirates Cove
On the town square, Pirates Cove is an adorable Italian influenced restaurant. Enjoy a cerveza of fresh fish al fresco while people watching on the town's busiest street.
Los Pelicanos
A newcomer to the island's restaurant population, Los Pelicanos proved to be one of the town's best. The night we were there the home made fettuccini with seafood was just amazing. The place is adorable, service first rate and everything we ordered delicious. Off the town square but worth the search!
