Catch 6 Species in one day!
The locals who make Holbox their home are mainly fishermen. Sport fishing has recently become one of the islands major attractions. Off shore deep sea fishing for such large game as Tarpon, Cobia, Amberjack and Barracuda as well as Red Snapper and Grouper can be caught either on rods or using the more traditional ‘Mexican Yoyo’s’ a form of drop line.
Saltwater fly fishing is also growing rapidly in the waters just off the island as well as in the mangroves and rivers surrounding this natural paradise. The Yalahau Lagoon is one of the best places for fly-fishing in the world. During the summer you can catch big such fish as Tarpon, Snook, Permit and Sea Trout.
Fishing guides are available for charter. Boats are small by US standards. For many years fishing was done in fiberglass ‘Pongas’ which can seat up to 6 somewhat comfortably. Recently a few guides brought new boats to the island giving anglers a bit more comfort. Fees run about $350 USD a day.
In addition to fishing, diving is wonderful on Holbox. During the given seasons such delicacies as conch, langosta, octopus can be taken. You must always obey local laws as conservation on this island is an absolute must. While on the water you may well see bottle nose dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, alligators, flamingos, egrets, pelicans, herons and so much more.
